Canberra City emerged victorious in all 3 Open divisions of the Canberra Cup contested 3- 5 November 2006 at the Deakin Playing Fields, Makin Place, Deakin.A record 430 touch football players converged on the Australian Capital Territory to fight for the 2006 Canberra Cup crown in three Open and two social divisions. The annual tournament, in its third year in existence, featured local and interstate players competing keenly in all sections of the competition.In a closely contested 2006 Mixed Open division, the Canberra Cup was awarded to Canberra City after a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Tuggeranang Vikings. Ben Nicoll & Kelly Goodwin were standout performers for the Canberra City combination.The Womens’ Open division was also won by Canberra City. 6-4 against the “Old Ducks”.The “Old Ducks” team featuresd a number of Canberra City over 30’s Women’s players who pushed the youthful Canberra City team all the way.The Goodwin sisters, Danielle and Kelly, combined with Shailyn Williams and Courtney Hinchcliffe to platform the Canberra City victory.The Men’s Open Final was always going to be a fast and skillful contest with both teams chockful of talent. Vikings threw everything at the Canberra City Bears before going down gallantly 8 -5 in an exciting final.National Rugby League star Jamie Soward, returned home to guide his old club, Canberra City Bears to their first ever Open Men’s Canberra Cup title.In the Inaugural Social section of the Canberra Cup, Allstars defeted the Dream team 7- 2 in the Men’s social, and Highlanders prevailed 7-3 over the Titans in the Mixed social division. A fantastic time was had by all participants on and off the field of play, and spectators enjoyed a feast of Touch Football action. Tournament organisers will look to build on the growth and success of the Canberra Cup in 2006, with a bigger and brighter event next year.
