Fernie prepares skaters for The Big One next month in Nelson

Tomlin placed 10th with her elements, making very strong axel attempt, and 12th with her Freeskate program.Considering the short preparation time with the Christmas break, coach Sarah Gower was proud of her athletes.“Both skaters performed to a high level as well as showing excellent sportsmanship,” said Gower.”We also had a lot of fun.”Focus will now shift to the highlight of the season — the 2013 Kootenay Regional Competition taking place in Nelson February 1-3 at the NDCC Arena.More than 100 skaters from all parts of the Kootenays join 15 Nelson Figure Skating Club competitors at the three day event — expected to be the largest showcase of figure skating talent to hit Nelson in years.For more information visit nelsonfigureskatingclub.ca Two West Kootenay skaters did not look out of place at the new Skate Canada East Kootenay Invitational held recently in Fernie.Morgan Sabo, of Nelson and Beaver Valley’s Breanna Tomlin took good advantage to capture medals in competition during several categories in the first event of 2013.In Junior Bronze Preliminary Skills, Sabo tied for Gold and notched a Bronze Medal in Preliminary Elements. Skills and elements test the skater’s technical finesse and are performed without music.In the Freeskate category, where judges assess all aspects of a skater’s performance from musical interpretation to technical skill, Sabo notched her second Bronze of the event.last_img
