first_imgJob SummaryReceiving work direction from the Interim Medical Director(Physician), and reporting to the Associate Vice President ofHealth, Wellness, and Student Services, the Psychiatrist worksindependently in performing assigned student services andconsultations with the Student Health Center (SHC) medical staffand Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) counseling staff.Consultation could involve advice regarding psychiatric diagnostictreatment and psychotherapeutic activities and are in accordancewith the overall operation of the SHC and within the scope of theprogram established by the Board of Trustees. The incumbent mayprovide highly specialized advice regarding planning, coordinating,and evaluating ongoing psychiatric care of students. All staff areexpected to conform to CSU, State, and Federal regulations andlaws. Although unlikely, there may be an occasion of brief eveningor weekend work. Working collegially and collaboratively to supportstudent success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SHCpositions. The Psychiatrist is expected to obtain a detailed intakeassessment, as well as to order any appropriate laboratory tests tosupport diagnostic evaluations. The Psychiatrist may whenappropriate, refer students, to other practitioners with the SJSUHealth/Wellness Center. Chronic psychiatric illness may requirereferral to community resources for more extensive follow-up andtreatment.Key Responsibilities Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence andreports.Thorough knowledge of current and advanced principles ofgeneral psychiatry, including knowledge of available communityresources and how to use them.Demonstrated skills in diagnostic clinical decision-making andcritical thinking.Demonstrated ability to provide accurate psychiatric diagnosisand treatment.Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform patient carein functional areas to which assigned.Working knowledge of ethics and standards of local and nationalmedical associations and understanding local, state, and federalgovernment regulations.Working knowledge of software applicable to this position, suchas medical record and scheduling software.Excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient tocommunicate with both patients and SHC staff.Ability to quickly assess emergency psychiatric situations andprovide the necessary prompt course of action.Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate an assigned, on-goingclinical program.Ability to prepare comprehensive intake case histories.Ability to work 3-4 days per week (24-32) hours.Ability to observe, listen to, and work with a diversemulticultural population of students and staff in a universitycommunity.Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriatelyhandle sensitive communications with employees and externalagencies.Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal,CSU and SJSU policies and procedures.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative workingrelationships with others.Ability to perform accurately in a detail-orientedenvironment.Excellent customer service and public relation skills.Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and planwork and projects.Ability to participate on medical staff committees asrequired.Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperativeworking relationships within a diverse multiculturalenvironment.
