Gromit named UKs favourite dog

first_imgGromit, from the animated show Wallace and Gromit, is Britain’s favourite dog, according to Star Sports, sponsor of the English Greyhound Derby at Towcester.The ‘Plasticine Pooch’, created by Aardman Animations, commanded 14 per cent of the vote in a survey of 2,000 people commissioned by the bookmaker ahead of the upcoming Greyhound Derby.Female rough-collie Lassie (right), who shot to fame in the mid-1950s, was the second most popular dog in the poll of ten with 11 per cent, a score shared by mystery-loving mutt Scooby Doo.Brian (Family Guy) and Muttley (Wacky Races) finished joint fourth and fifth while Marley, the loveable Labrador from Marley and Me, was next best with a seven per cent share.Lady and the Tramp commanded six per cent of the vote, narrowly seeing off Snoopy from Charlie Brown & Friends who bagged four per cent.Luke Tarr, PR Director for Star Sports, said: “They say dogs are a man’s best friend, but everybody has their favourite and for more than 14 per cent of people that’s Wallace’s loyal companion Gromit.“The animated creation saw off competition from the likes of old-favourite Lassie, Brian from Family Guy, Muttley and even Scooby Doo – so he did well to be crowned Star Sports’ top dog.”Star Sports, the Gentleman’s bookmaker, are the official sponsors of the English Greyhound Derby, which is held at Towcester racecourse on Saturday 2nd June.The race, which takes place on the 500-metre course, dates back to 1927 and boasts a £350,000 prize fund, with the winner claiming a whopping £175,000.
