Women’s World Cup, India vs Pakistan: Proud of Ekta Bisht, says Mithali Raj after crushing victory

first_imgThe Indian women’s team hammered Pakistan by 95 runs to earn their third straight victory in this year’s Women’s World Cup in Derby.Left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht starred with the ball for India, picking up her second five-wicket haul. She finished with figures of 5/18 from her 10 overs. Her first spell did all the damage for Pakistan and they could never really recover.India captain Mithali Raj was high on praise for the 31-year-old.”Ekta has always delivered when given the new ball. I am very proud of her; her spell was so crucial. Her first spell got the team back into the game,” Mithali said.Batting first, India lost their star batter Smriti Mandhana early. The Pakistan bowlers bowled beautifully to keep the run scoring in check and kept applying the pressure on the batsmen. However, Punam Raut and Deepti Sharma steadied the ship before the former fell for a well made 47 with the scores 74/2 from 22.2 overs. India lost Mithali and Deepti soon after and they were in a spot of bother at 94/4.Harmanpreet Kaur and Mona Meshram kept the scoreboard ticking and it looked like they are going to take India to a safe total. But, they fell in quick succession as well. Wicketkeeper Sushma Verma and former captain Jhulan Goswami then built a partnership to take India to 145 before Goswami fell.India were starting at a below par total but Verma’s lusty blows towards the end made sure that the Women in Blue finish on 169/9 from their 50 overs.Defending a paltry total of 170, India were right on the money from the word go. Bisht struck in the second over and Pakistan never recovered from that. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nahida Khan and captain Sana Mir did put up some resistance but they failed to take Pakistan’s score past the 100-mark.advertisementTalking about the slow scoring rate in the first innings, she said that there were some anxious moments.”There were some anxious moments,” she said.Verma and Goswami struck a 34-run partnership for the seventh wicket, which turned out to be crucial.”That partnership involving Sushma was crucial. We got the breakthroughs. This is one of the off days for the top order but we will look into that in the next game,” said the India captain. The 34-year-old said that there were a lot of strategies since they were defending a small total.”I believe when you’re defending a small total, you come up with a lot of strategies. “When you intend to become the top side, the bowling side should be able to come back and perform the way the girls have done today,” said Mithali before signing off.India now have won all their three matches and will next play Sri Lanka on July 5.last_img read more

FICA backs Aussie cricketers in pay dispute with CA

first_imgMumbai, Jul 3 (PTI) The Federation of International Cricketers? Associations (FICA) today extended its support to the Australian Cricketers? Association (ACA) and its members in their pay dispute with Cricket Australia.”FICA is concerned with CAs desire to end the percentage revenue sharing model that has so successfully underpinned the partnership between the players and administrators in Australia for twenty years,” FICA said in a media statement.”The model has not only been hugely successful for Australian cricket but has been a model of best practise adopted by associations in cricket and other sports, worldwide,” the statement said.According to FICA, 230 professional cricketers, whom it represents, have been rendered unemployed following the ending of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the players and CA and the failure of the latter to negotiate a new agreement with the ACA based on the same partnership principles of the previous MOU.”FICA is also seriously concerned with CAs approach to its dealings with the ACA throughout this ongoing process. FICA commends the ACA and the Australian players for their unity and resolve and for their consistent attempts to negotiate with CA in a professional and transparent manner, including their willingness to use independent mediation to reach a resolution,” the statement said. The cricketers federation said CA has given indications that it may attempt to restrict now un-contracted players from competing in other cricket events by refusing to grant them a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or threatening them with future playing bans and has opposed it.advertisement”FICA reiterates its strong opposition to any artificial restrictions that unfairly attempt to prevent players from earning a living and that have not been agreed with players or their representatives. FICA believes that such restrictions would be open to legal challenge in most jurisdictions as a restraint of trade,” the statement added.”The players are the game. History has shown that where country boards work in genuine partnership with players and their representatives the game thrives and succeeds. Cricket is at a crucial moment in its history, with new and competing markets for players, fans and broadcasters. I believe that boards should be working more collaboratively with players in the current cricket landscape, not pushing them away,” said FICA chief, Vikram Solanki.”FICA and its member associations stand shoulder to shoulder in support of the ACA and the Australian cricketers in their current dispute with their board. As an important stakeholder in the game, players and their associations deserve to be treated with professionalism and respect. It is in the interests of everyone in the world game that the situation in Australia is resolved quickly and in a manner that is acceptable to the players collectively,” said Tony Irish, FICA Executive Chairman and SACA CEO.Former South Africa skipper and FICA Independent Board Member Graeme Smith said, “I was part of a revenue share partnership model for many years as a player and this was a critical factor in fostering the relationship between Board and players. In the current cricket environment where players have other options I dont understand why a board would want to change a partnership that has proved to be successful.””It has been heartening to see the unity shown from the male and female players across Australia at a time when they have come under immense pressure. I know there is a lot of support around the world for the principled stance they are taking to maintain a genuine partnership for all players, not just a few,” said Lisa Sthalekar, FICA Independent Board Member and ACA Executive Member. Ohio State mens basketball announces Top 5 recruiting class for 2014

OSU coach Thad Matta lectures his players during a game against Ohio Nov. 12 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU won, 79-69.Credit: Ritika Shah / Asst. photo editorOhio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta has officially finalized his 2014 recruiting class, and he’s happy with the group set to don the Scarlet and Gray next year.“(I’m) just very, very excited about this class,” Matta said Thursday. “I think the biggest thing with this particular class is we got what we wanted.”Matta announced Thursday the signing of four players, including two from Ohio, to complete yet another class that ranks in the Top 5 of the country. The four players Matta added to his crew for 2014 include guard D’Angelo Russell, forward Keita Bates-Diop, forward Jae’Sean Tate and center David Bell.Matta spoke about Tate, a Pickerington, Ohio native, first Thursday, calling him “a warrior,” and someone who can play multiple positions.“Everybody’s asking me, ‘What position is Jae’Sean?’ And I always answer the same, ‘I don’t know, but I know he’s going to be on the floor,’” Matta said. “He’s got a great first step. He can guard I think all five positions on the floor … You’re getting a great player and you’re getting a guy who is a Buckeye.”Matta called Russell  “another great guard at Ohio State,” even though it may be unclear whether he will play point guard or shooting guard.“Is he a point guard? Is he a two guard? I don’t know. I think we can run him at both,” Matta said. “He’s got the ability to make big time plays with the ball in his hands.”Russell is the complete package, Matta said, because he does all things well.“The first time I ever saw him play, he had six threes in the first half and the second half, he didn’t take a one but he probably had 10 assists,” Matta said. “He’s just got something about him.”Another player who Matta said “wants to be at Ohio State” is Bell, who is from Garfield Heights, Ohio.“I think we’ll bring his skill along, but he runs the floor, he blocks shots, he rebounds out of his area,” Matta said of Bell.Bates-Diop is another player that can do it all because of his athleticism, Matta said.“I think from the standpoint of playing multiple positions, he scores, he passes, he rebounds, he can defend, can handle the basketball,” Matta said of Bates-Diop.Matta said he and the rest of the coaching staff set out on the recruiting trail with mindset that they wanted to replace current senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. — which he said they did.“We feel unequivocally we did that with guys that can do a lot of different things,” Matta said. “I kind of like the position we’re in.”Matta and the Buckeyes are set to travel to Milwaukee for their first road game of the season Saturday, taking on Marquette at 1 p.m. read more
