Medals up for the taking in track and field

first_imgThe finals for the long distance race will certainly entertain the crowd as the home athletes will be eager to use the support to push over the French speaking Polynesians who have dominated the event over the years. In the men’s 3000m steeplechase finals (where there are no heats), Papua New Guinea hopes will be on experienced  veteran Sapolai Yao and his understudies Skene Kiage and Andipas Georasi to cause an upset. In the last Pacific Games, Yao and Skene settled for the second and third placing, while the gold medal was won by The’o Houdret of New Caledonia. And in the women’s 5000m race, Ongan Awa, Mary Kua and Rama Kumilgo will carry the nation’s hopes on their shoulders. The event was won by New Caledonian Anne Beaufils in the 2011 games.PNG in the previous Pacific Games have dominated the sprints events but have not repeated the dose in the men and women’s long distance races and field events. The men’s 3000m steeplechase will run at 6:30pm and the women’s gruelling 5000m race at 7:40pm.Also on schedule for this evening, with medals on the take are  the field events of pole vault (female), javelin (male), and short put (female) finals.     Photo:  medal hope and veteran runner Sapolai Yao in a US athletics meet.last_img read more
